Summer programming for middle school students can be challenging, especially during New York’s sweltering heat waves. That’s why we were thrilled to partner with the DYCD-funded Beacon Summer Rising Program at M.S. 117 in the Bronx to provide engaging, air-conditioned art classes that kept students creatively engaged during some of the hottest days of the year.

Four Inspiring Art Sessions for Teen Artists

Over the course of our partnership with M.S. 117’s summer program, Art Fund Studio delivered four distinctive painting classes designed specifically for the 12-16 year age group. Each session accommodated 20-25 participants, allowing us to provide the personalized attention that makes our programming so effective for middle school students.

Our carefully curated painting themes captured both local NYC pride and universal artistic appeal:

Brooklyn Bridge: Students explored urban landscape painting while celebrating one of New York City’s most iconic landmarks. This session combined art technique instruction with local history and civic pride.

Spring Sakura: Participants learned delicate brush techniques and color blending while creating serene cherry blossom scenes. This project introduced students to nature-inspired art and different cultural artistic traditions.

Lovebirds on a Tree: This charming project allowed students to practice detailed work and storytelling through art, creating whimsical scenes that showcased both technical skill and personal creativity.

Caribbean Beach: Perfect for hot summer days, this tropical scene let students experiment with vibrant colors and escapist imagery while learning about seascape composition and color theory.

Personalized Attention in Group Settings

Working with groups of 20-25 middle schoolers requires a special balance of structure and individual support. Our experienced instructors excel at managing larger groups while ensuring each participant receives the personal guidance they need to succeed. We’ve found that this age group particularly benefits from:

  • Individual technique coaching during painting sessions
  • Peer learning opportunities as students share tips and inspiration
  • Flexible pacing that accommodates different skill levels and working speeds
  • Encouraging feedback that builds confidence and artistic risk-taking

Expanding Summer Programming Opportunities

The success of our partnership with M.S. 117’s DYCD Summer Rising Program highlights the growing demand for engaging indoor enrichment activities during summer months. Schools, community centers, and youth organizations throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens are discovering how professional art instruction can enhance their summer programming while providing relief from challenging weather conditions.

Whether you’re coordinating summer camps, organizing school events during hot weather, planning indoor field trip alternatives, or seeking engaging activities for extended day programs, Art Fund Studio delivers professional programming that keeps students creatively engaged and educationally enriched.
